LIS 384K.11, Database-Management Principles and Applications
This course provides:
- An introduction to relational databases, text databases, and other types of databases
- An introduction to entity-relationship (E-R) analysis, a tool for analyzing
information-system data and processes
- Hands-on experience with a widely used microcomputer-based database-management system
(DBMS): Microsoft Access 97
- Experience in constructing an application (i.e., a relational database for an
information-system situation of the student's choice) using Access (or, in appropriate
circumstances, using another DBMS of the student's choice)
LIS 384K.13, Microcomputers in Managing Information
This course provides:
- An introduction to the current state of, and to trends in, hardware and
software used in and on microcomputers
- Emphasis on what managers and supervisors in libraries and other information
systems need to know concerning microcomputers and their use (e.g., evaluation
of hardware and software for purchase; issues of health, privacy, security,
and censorship; and managerial implications of the extraordinarily fast pace
of change in microcomputer technology)
- Experience in groupwork to evaluate microcomputer-related technology
LIS 387.5, Systems Analysis and Evaluation
This course provides:
- An introduction to the system-development cycle and to the tools of systems analysis
- An introduction to business re-engineering and to the use of systems-analysis tools in
the framework of business re-engineering
- Team-based hands-on experience with these tools through dealing with a project
(different each semester) concerning an information-system problem
LIS 397.1, Introduction to Research in Library and Information Science
This course provides:
- An understanding of the nature of scientific research, and of its uses in both the
science and the practice of librarianship and information management
- An introduction to the planning of a theoretical or pragmatic research investigation,
and practice in preparing outlines of such investigations (e.g., research proposals,
project proposals)
- An understanding of how to evaluate reports of research, and practice in such
evaluations
- An awareness of a variety of techniques used in research in librarianship and
information management
- An introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics
