Overview of the System Development Cycle

This page provides a graphic overview of what is known as the system development cycle: viz., a typical pattern of activities that can occur during a project aimed at modifying an existing system in order to create a new and improved version of it, or at developing a totally new system.

The first graphic portrays an over-all flowchart view of the Phases of System Development, in what is a fairly standard way of dividing a system-development project up into distinctive phases of activity, conducted sequentially: viz., the Analysis, Design, Production, Implementation, and Operation phases.

The second graphic is a detailed flowchart of activities during a typical Analysis Phase of a system-development project..

The third graphic is a detailed flowchart of activities during a typical Design Phase of a system-development project.

The fourth, and final, graphic is a detailed flowchart of activities during a typical sequence of the Production, Implementation, and Operation Phases of a system-development project.
