October 2000
Week before 10/30: Dr. Paul Resta contacts Dr. Loriene Roy
about contributing and/or creating a virtual library for Northwest
Indian College as part of the PT3 grant shared by NWIC, Portland
State University, Texas A&M, and UT Austin. Dr. Vivian Delgado
at NWIC expressed the College's need for a good online educational
library.

11/8: Conference call with Dr. Roy, Dr. Resta, and Dr. Delgado.
Dr. Delgado explains that NWIC wants to gain accreditation to become
a stand-alone degree-conferring institution. In order to facilitate
accreditation, they need an educational library that their pre-service
teaching students can use.
Dr. Roy contacts Nancy Carroll, the librarian at NWIC, in order
to include her in the virtual library's development.
11/9: Dr. Roy emails Liz Staples from Bay Mills Community
College and Dr. Maurita Holland from the University of Michigan.
Dr. Holland and the University of Michigan created a virtual library
home page template for Bay Mills under the auspices of a Kellogg
grant. Dr. Roy wanted to let them know who we are, what we are doing
and to see if our work supports their efforts.
11/27: Videoconference with Portland State, UT Austin, and
NWIC. Dr. Roy announces that her Spring 2000 classes (Information
Resources in the Social Sciences and Library Instruction) could
help create the virtual library for NWIC.

to participate due to inclement weather.
12/19: Dr. Roy receives sample syllabi from NWIC in order
to create relevant pathfinder topics for the Social Sciences class.

2/5: We receive the ACES Goals and Objectives.
2/6-9: Anne Marie Hilscher goes to Portland as UT's representative
for the PT3 meeting. She learns that NWIC is very happy about the
pathfinders and the technology demonstrations that will be included
in our virtual library. Vivian Delgado mentions that it would be
nice if we could incorporate some of the ideas and philosophies
espoused in Greg Cajete's book Look to the Mountain. Additionally,
they would appreciate any information we could gather on grants
and accreditation.
2/13: Anne Marie reports on the meeting in Portland to the
Library Instruction class.
2/14: Nancy Carroll provides us with the contact information
for Bill James, the Lummi language director, so that we may see
whether we can use Lummi words in naming the sections of our virtual
library.
2/20: Dr. Roy creates the first draft of the virtual library's
topic and connections using the software Inspiration.
2/21: Dr. Roy meets Dr. Samuel Henry in Tampa, Florida at
an international conference on service-based learning.
2/27: Mark Cristal, a graduate student in education, demonstrates
QuickTime (software that allows one to make virtual moving pictures)
and takes a QTVR shot of the Library Instruction class.
2/28: The virtual library project contribution costs are
added to the ACES quarterly report.

3/4: Peter Larsen creates a temporary storage web page for
any useful web sites the Library Instruction students may find for
the virtual library.
3/5: The pathfinders created by the Social Sciences class
are completed and uploaded onto the web.
3/6: The Library Instruction students select the virtual
library technology and content areas for which they will be responsible.
Dr. Roy presents the second draft of the Inspiration document.
3/7: Videoconference with A&M, PSU, and UT Austin. NWIC
could not participate due to tech problems. Lois Cohen expresses
her enthusiasm for our Inspiration document and for the progress
Dr. Roy and her students are making on the virtual library.
Aimee Akerman creates a mock-up of a virtual library home page.
The virtual library discussion list is activated. This list includes
members of Library Instruction as well as interested parties from
NWIC.
3/12-13: Tony Cherian goes to NWIC and assists with a technology
workshop held at the college.
3/20: Tony reports on his trip to Washington to the Library
Instruction class.
Cathy Pedraza presents her draft of the website evaluation section
of the virtual library.
3/27: The Library Instruction class looks at and discusses
some excerpts from Look to the Mountain that Dr. Roy prepared.
We speak about what aspects of our virtual library--both in content
and design--integrate Cajete's ideas.
Neil Krasnoff and Piper Martin present technology demonstrations
on converting text files to HTML and HTML I, respectively.

April 2001
4/3: There are three technology demonstrations:
Cathy Pedraza demonstrates Advanced HTML, Aimee Akerman
presents Dreamweaver 4.0, and Anne Marie Hilscher shows everyone
how to use Image Mapping.
We discuss the fact that we need a definitive file structure and
standards for the virtual library site.
People show their work in progress to the class for comments and
suggestions.
4/5: Tony Cherian and Aimee Akerman set up the official file
structure.
4/10: The technology demonstrations today are Peter Larsen's
explanation of the finer points of PowerPoint and AJ Johnson's presentation
of Photoshop 5.5.
Dr. Joseph Janes, creator of the Internet Public Library, visits
the class and speaks about his own experiences making a virtual
library. He views the NWIC site we are working on and offers
suggestions and encouragement.
Aimee Akerman familiarizes the class with the file structure and
we vote on the standards for the site.
4/17: Our technology knowledge increases today after Frances
Ramberg demonstrates Adobe Acrobat 4.0 and Valerie Valdez introduces
us to Java Scripting.
The class members continue to report on their site contribution.
Additionally, we work on our pages in class in order to exchange
our knowledge and help each other as needed.
4/24: Amos Turner gives the final technology demonstration
with an explanation of Flash.
Everyone refines their pages and prepares them for uploading while
they have their pictures taken.
