Olga G. Leontieva Biography

My name is Olga G. Leontieva. I am a Deputy Director of Archival Department of Tver Region, Ph. Dr. History. I graduated in history from the Tver State University in 1979 and hold a degree from the Russian State University for Humanities, specializing in archival science, in 1991. I began my work at the Tver Region State Archives as archivist in 1980. Since 1987 I have served as a main specialist of the Archives Department of the Tver Region Administration. My professional and research interests are archival description, electronic records, and organization of appraisal and preservation of archival documents.

Also I am a part time lecturer at the Tver State University. I teach classes in archives and records management and information retrieval. Since 1999 I took part in seminars of the Archival Training Center of the European University at St. Petersburg and lectured on information technologies and archival description standards.

I have written some articles on various aspects of archival appraisal, archival description, and access to archival materials, for example American Archivist (1998), Comma (2002). I took part in several research projects such as:

  • the joint project of the RLG, the Hoover Institution, and the Russian State Archives Service to record Russian archival materials in the RLIN data-base, 1994-1997;
  • the research project of the Federal Archives Service of Russia to develop the integrated information system, called Data-base Archival Fond, for Russian archives, 1995-1998;
  • the research project of the Archival Department of Tver Region called the Integration of Tver Archives to Internet supported by a grant of the Open Society Institute, 1998 – 1999. The web-site is called Tver Archives;
  • the research project 'Electronic Records: The Problems of Professional Training of Archivists' supported by a grant of Fulbright Program, 2000.

I am a member of the Russian Society of Historians and Archivists (ROIA).

From 1994 to 2001 I had the professional training in the Netherlands and the USA. There is the professional training for Russian Archivists that was organized by the International Institute of Social History (Amsterdam) at the Dutch archives in 1994. I visited the USA four times, in 1994 as participant of the workshop organized by the Research Library Group (RLG), in 1996/1997 as a grantee of the Junior Faculty Development Program (JFDP) with project 'Information Management of Archives', in 2000 as a grantee of the Fulbright Scholar Program with project 'Electronic Records', and in 2001 as participant of the professional training organized by the Bentley Historical Library and the International Institute of the Michigan State University.
