Requirements
Applicants for the Preservation and Conservation Studies
program must meet all admission requirements of The University of Texas
at Austin Graduate School and the School of Information. These criteria
include:
- Completion of
a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in the United States,
or proof of equivalent education at a foreign institution, with a grade-point
average of B (3.0) or higher
- A Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) score of at least 1050 total on the verbal and quantitative
aptitude portions, certified within the last five years
- A completed application
to UT Graduate School with supporting documents
- A completed application
to GSLIS with supporting documents, including the PCS application form.
International students
must submit a score of 600 or more on the Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) if applicable.
Applicants for the
Certificate of Advanced Study must have a master's degree in library and
information science or in a related field.

Additional Requirements
for Admission to the Conservation Studies Program
In addition to the
School of Information and UT Graduate School requirements, applicants
to the conservator program must:
- Have successfully
completed a year of college chemistry including one semester of organic
chemistry
- Be interviewed
by PCS faculty in Austin or by telephone
- Show evidence
of craft ability, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination by offering
a portfolio, preferably of three-dimensional work such as bookbinding,
sculpture, or crafts.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in
bookbinding or book repair
- Additional experience
working in a library preservation department or a conservation lab
- Photographic skills
The conservator program
may be started only in the Fall semester.
How To Apply to PCS
Prospective students interested in entering either the
preservation administration or the conservator program must (1) complete
the application process for both the Graduate School of the University
of Texas at Austin and the School of Information by February 1, and (2)
include this form with the application
for admission to the School of Information.
Interviews for admission to the Conservator Program will be arranged with
qualified applicants in April.
