The Internet used to be known only to a relatively small group of researchers and students.  How things have changed in a few short years! Today, we can't imagine a world without email, websites, and chat-rooms.

This course will show you how to use the basic Internet tools for communicating and publishing information.  You will also learn various tricks and techniques for finding the information and services you need.

Most importantly, we will discuss some of the issues that affect us all in this electronic world: from copyright problems, to privacy concerns, to global Internet growth and the fact that not everybody has yet access to the Net.

In fact, at UT Austin we are very fortunate to have a fantastic network infrastructure, which allows us to use streaming media for teaching this class.  You will also get a glimpse of the various services and technologies that are being used on our campus.

You will explore lots of new territory during this course, and we don't want you to feel alone.  Please contact us whenever you need to, and we will do everything we can to help you.  If you don't require a personal reply, but wish to submit a comment on any aspect of this course, you can fill out the Instant Feedback form at anytime.

Finally, remember that nobody knows everything about the Net: learn from others, and share what you know.

Good luck and see you online!

    Grete --- Quinn -- Jeni
