Competency Quiz 1 (10% of Final Grade)

Each student must show competency in basic skills needed to complete the course. The competency examinations are required and are each worth 10% of the grade. Until the competency examinations are completed satisfactorily no grade can be assigned in the remaining components of the course.

Students should be able to do the following for quiz 1:

  1. describe the roots of the Internet
  2. describe parts of Internet addresses and know some of the country codes
  3. issue commands to move around in your directory to get to the root directory
  4. issue commands to move back to your home directory
  5. describe what TCP/IP is
  6. define "UNIX"
  7. describe how to get help using man
  8. issue commands in Pine and Pico
  9. give examples of file extensions
  10. identify basic elements of netiquette
  11. describe the difference between newsgroups and mailing lists
  12. know some emoticons (smileys) and email specific communication terms
  13. identify major elements in how to select an ISP
  14. issue commands to change your password
  15. issue commands to find out where you are in the directory
  16. issue commands to change directories
  17. issue commands to list files in the directory
  18. issue commands to list files, view, and change permissions
  19. issue commands to list all files including dot files
  20. issue commands to display a screen at a time
  21. issue commands and describe why to use: ls, cd, finger, pwd, more, cat
  22. issue commands and describe why to use who, whois, whoami, rm, cp, etc.
  23. issue commands to create subdirectories
  24. find a newsgroup of interest
  25. perform steps to subscribe/unsubscribe to the newsgroup
  26. issue commands to post to a newsgroup
  27. issue commands to reply to a posting
  28. issue commands to telnet to another computer
  29. issue commands to subscribe and unsubscribe to a mailing list
  30. issue commands to use anonymous ftp
  31. issue commands to navigate directories
  32. issue commands to get and put a file
  33. issue commands to look at the file
  34. issue commands to find ftp resources
  35. describe compression programs
  36. issue commands to use compression and uncompression
  37. know the differences between gopher, archie, ftp, telnet
