<TD WIDTH="250" VALIGN="TOP">
Amy Lewis - I created this page and I continue to be the only person working on it. The page continues to sit on the server where I originally created it while I was in grad school. I've now graduated and moved to Colorado where I work as a multimedia, web, and systems consultant and designer. I have my bachelor's in sports management and my master's in information science.
<TD width=250 VALIGN="TOP">
I've been involved in sports most of my life - as an athlete (basketball, rugby, track, tennis, swimming, diving, cycling, skiing, golf, softball, football); a coach (rugby, basketball); an administrator (rugby, sports festivals); a volunteer online advocate, reference source, and writer; and of course as a fan.

<th colspan=2><H3>How did the Women's Sports Page develop?</h3></th>
<tr>
<TD WIDTH="250" VALIGN="TOP">
The WWW Women's Sports Page debuted in Jan. of 95. At that time I cruised the WWW looking for women's sports (on listservs, usenet groups, and webpages) and quickly found that there were very sparse offerings on any of the catalogs, search sites, or indexes, yet there were plenty of pages, other resources, and interest. I found the women's basketball newsgroup, but there were no others dedicated to women's sports (there still aren't).
<P>
I created every category of sport I could think of and then began filling in the spots as I started
<TD width=250 VALIGN="TOP">

surfing and came up with pages to point to.

Sometimes people have suggested categories to add and if I can find webpages to match I add it.
<P>
I've been involved in one way or another with getting exposure for women's sports so it was a natural step to create an index so other people could see all the resources out there on the web. I believe it's important to use the web to publish information about women's sports, especially because this information isn't being covered in the traditional media.

<th colspan=2><H3>What plans for improvements do you have for the site?</h3></th>
<tr>
<TD WIDTH="250" VALIGN="TOP">
I'm continually updating and finding new locations or hearing about some that I don't have. There are always more links to add to my page and the never-ending job of updating the links I already have. I update the page as often as every week, and as infrequently as every 3 months. My intention is to keep up with what's out there and to make the links as accessible as possible (by having headings and sub-headings for sport and concept).
<TD width=250 VALIGN="TOP">
Although I now have separate pages for each sport, I intend to keep the site simple because it's intended to be a pathfinder. I also want the
pages to remain accessible to as many people as possible, including those folks with older machines, slower connections, and limited resources. The pages will remain graphically light and information dense.

<tr>
<th colspan=2><H3>Why don't you have links for _______? and
<br>Why is it organized this way?</h3></th>
<tr>
<TD WIDTH="250" VALIGN="TOP">
I get about 10 - 20 emails per week from people who want specific things on my site. If they give me a URL and the page they want me to link is specific to women in sport then I add it to my page. If they don't give me a URL, but are looking for a specific sport, I go looking for it on the web. But I don't always find something because the problem persists that there are not many catalogs/indexes/lists that include women's sports. The best way for me to add a new link is for someone to search the web and give me the URL. The next option if for anyone who thinks there should be a page on a specific topic to create the page and give me the URL. I'm always happy
<TD WIDTH="250" VALIGN="TOP">

to help someone create a webpage for a women's sports site. If a specific sport has no links on my page, there's a good chance that someone hasn't created a webpage for that sport that is specifically about women.
<p>
The beauty of the WWW Women's Sports Page is that it is a simple index for people to jump from to get onto the real content pages. I intentionally created my list of categories so that people would need to browse to find any
particular sport - the idea was to get people to look at all the options and realize the scope of what's out there.

<tr>
<th colspan=2><H3>What is the bigger picture in all this?</h3></th>
<tr>
<TD WIDTH="250" VALIGN="TOP">
The bottom-line purpose of my page, my writing, and my advocacy is to help increase the visibility of women in sport. I'm happy to share any information I have with people who ask and I often answer reference questions for people who write to me. I also put people in touch with groups and individuals who can help answer their questions. I attempt to support the other women and men online and in the traditional media who are doing this work.

<TD width=250 VALIGN="TOP">
As with most of the pages on the WWW, this page would not exist
without the superb and continuing efforts of the many people who
write and administer the pages to which I link. I try to let those
people know that I appreciate their work and that I'm linking to
their pages. If you could, please let the creators and
administrators of those pages know that you appreciate
their good work. And if you can, create a webpage of your own!
