Guidelines
for Book Reviewers
Beginning in 2006, under the title Libraries & the Cultural Record, the journal’s scope will shift from the exclusive study of library history to the broader history of collections of recorded knowledge in libraries, archives, and museums. Book reviewers should be prepared to comment on the work under review from this perspective. This is particularly important when the work is not solely devoted to those subjects constituting the journal’s scope.
Reviewers should browse the Books for Review to select a book you would like to review, then complete and submit the Book Review Form.
If you would like to suggest a book to review, Libraries & the Cultural Record is interested in books that explore the history of one or more of the following:
- libraries and librarianship
- archival and records enterprise
- preservation and conservation of the cultural record
- museums and museum administration
Manuscript Guidelines
- Book reviews should be 500-1000 words in length.
- Reviewers should follow The Chicago Manual of Style (15th ed.).
- Manuscript should be double-spaced (including headings), with 1-inch margins.
- Use Times New Roman 12-point font.
- Page numbers should appear in the top right margin of the manuscript (except on page 1).
- Use a single tab to indent the beginning of each paragraph.
- Use underline to designate italics.
- Use the first name and/or initial(s) of all persons in the first reference.
- Use the full title of an organization in the first reference. Acronyms should be spelled out in the first reference and may be used for all subsequent references.
- Include page numbers (in parentheses) for all quotations from the book being reviewed. For other works cited, include complete author's name(s), title, publisher, and place and date of publication.
- Endnotes may be used for unusually long bibliographical references or for incidental explanatory points that would, in the judgment of the reviewer, seriously interrupt the continuity of the text. Endnotes should appear on a separate page.
- Reviews may be edited for clarity or to meet space limitations.
Submission
- List your name and institutional affiliation, or city, at the end of the manuscript.
- Include your name, email address, and mailing address on a separate page.
- Manuscripts should be received by the deadline assigned. If reviews are received past the deadline, the editor may decline to publish the review.
- Email your manuscript as a Microsoft Word attachment to landc@ischool.utexas.edu.
