COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Records are the corporate and cultural memory of organizations, providing proof of business decisions and transactions. As organizations create and maintain more of their records electronically, they are struggling to develop effective policies, systems, and practices to capture, maintain, and preserve records, regardless of their physical format or medium. The course is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding in the field of records and information management. All of the life cycle elements of records management are covered from creation through maintenance to final disposition.

OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of the course, the students should be able to:

1. Understand the scope of records and information management and the role of the records manager in business or governmental organizations.
2. Recognize the relationship of records management to other elements of information management, such as data processing, word processing, and telecommunications.
3. Apply the management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling to the design and implementation of records management programs.
4. Implement the principles of a records retention program, including the inventory process and retention schedule development.
5. Plan and organize active records programs that include classification, retrieval, and control.
6. Plan and organize inactive records programs.
7. Plan and organize vital records protection programs.
8. Recognize the application of micrographics and related technologies including electronic document imaging.
9. Apply basic cost analysis, systems analysis, and problem solving techniques to records management functions.
10. Understand the career opportunities in records management and comprehend the professional, ethical, and legal responsibilities of the records manager.
