Uploading PowerPoint files to the Web
Carlos Ovalle

This particular example will use the program WS_FTP for file transfer. WS_FTP is available for use in the IT Lab and is included on the UT Connect CD. WS_FTP is also freely available for PCs from CNET at the CNET downloads site. Mac users can use Fetch to upload their files to the web in a similar manner.

Upon starting the program, the following dialog box appears:

If you have not used WS_FTP before, you will need to select "New," which will clear the boxes.
The Profile Name is only for your convenience, so the name can be whatever you choose.
The Host Name/Address at GSLIS is ftp.gslis.utexas.edu.
The Host Type should be "Automatic detect."
The User ID is your login name. You can select "OK" and then attempt to connect. At this point you will be required to enter your password.

There are several files that must be transferred to a publicly accessable folder. First, the original file saved as HTML. Next, the folder [filename]_files must also be transferred with all of the files included.

The left side of the program covers your local computer. You can use the "ChgDir" to change directories to the location of your files. Clicking on folders also opens them, and selecting the up arrow moves up a directory.

The right side of the program displays files on your account on the server. You will need to move to your public_html directory. If you do not have a public_html directory, you can use the "MkDir" button to create one.

Once you are in your public_html directory, you can highlight the file and related folder on your local machine and select the right arrow in the center of the screen to transfer the files to the server.

Next, the permissions of these files must be changed to allow them to be viewed. There are a number of ways of doing this, but we shall mention only two here. First, if your copy of WS_FTP includes the chmod option, you can use the procedure described below. Second, if your copy of WS_FTP does not include the chmod option, or if you are using Fetch, you can go to the GSLIS I.T. Lab page entitled How-to Publish Web Pages and follow the instructions there.

How to Use WS_FTP to Set Permissions

With your WS_FTP window open, right-click on the file and folder and select"chmod(UNIX)."

A dialog box will pop up. You should check Read and Write in the Owner section and Read in the Group and Other sections.

After this, your page should be viewable on the GSLIS server in your account at
http://www.gslis.utexas.edu/~[yourloginname]/[filename].
