Assignment 4 Back-of-the Book Indexing: 25% graded. Due March 28 Index the following article in the style of a back-of-the-book index: John Heilemann, "The Truth the Whole Truth and Nothing But the Truth: The Untold Story of the Microsoft Antitrust Case" Wired 8 (no. 11, Nov. 2000): 261-311. Part 1: Cindex Indexing The entire article will be indexed by each team of 3 or 4 students. Each team member will index a section of the article and then the team will combine the indexing, edit the index, and turn in one index for the entire article from the team.
NOTE!: YOU MUST RENUMBER THE PAGES from page 1 through page 51. Do not use the page numbering in the article. 1. Use Cindex indexing software to produce the index. NOTE: The demo version of Cindex for each student is limited to 100 lines. You'll combine the indexing on a full version of Cindex in the IP Lab. If you need to add additional lines for subheadings or for important entries that you couldnÕt include in your initial indexing, you may do so on the full version of Cindex in the IP Lab during the editing process. 4. Produce an index in the style indicated below. One summary per team. Be sure to include a title page of relevant data as you do on any assignment. Part 2: Word Embedded Indexing 1. Each of the four teams will use Word embedded indexing software to index only a portion of the article.
NOTE: You can use the indexing that your team has already done. (Use Cindex to make a page-number order index, so you can see what indexing has been done for the pages that youÕre indexing in Word. 2. Combine the indexing of team members using Word. Style for indexes 1. Capitalization: Capitalize the first letter of the first word of
the main heading (unless proper noun, which should be capitalized as
it is in the text); donÕt capitalize the subheadings (unless proper
noun). Sample entries (for punctuation): Daydreaming Dreaming. Assignment 4 Grading Criteria This assignment will be scored on the scale of 100 points gained being possible. Since the assignment is worth 25 % of the course grade, that amount will be determined by multiplying the points gained on the assignment by .25. For example, if a team earns 90 points, 90 will be multiplied by .25 and the number of points earned for the semsester grade by each team member will be 22.50. Specific grading criteria: 1. Main headings adequately represent content (11 pts.) Renumbering the pages When you locate the electronic version of the article, it will have lost the paging of the original article in the periodical. At this point, you need to identify the selection assigned to your team, copy it out of the electronic version to a separate file, and number the pages as found in the paper version of the article. [Consult Word for Windows to see how to begin numbering from some other number than page 1. It involves viewing the header and footer, choosing the footer, and then using the insert menu to insert page numbers beginning with your selectionÕs page numbers, and the position for the number (place it in the right hand corner, bottom of the page.] Title Page for the Assignment: Again, do not forget to create a title page for the assignment with relevant data for the assignment, class, date, team number, team members, etc., just as you have for other assignments. |
