DESCRIPTION OF YOUTH/CHILDREN'S SERVICES

In 1982, Galena Park ISD opened Cunningham Middle School as a new school. CMS was the first in Galena Park ISD to (1) use the computer for library administration; (2) use Accelerated Reader to promote reading; (3) use a regular plan to teach research (later adopting the Big Six as a method for teaching research); (4) to promote the school's History Fair with library-based research - the event is now a Multi-Cultural Fair, a district-wide event ; and (5) to be rated TAAS Exemplary as a Middle School in 1999 and again in 2001. CMS is the only secondary school in the district to be rated Exemplary! I was the first librarian in the district to sponsor an annual Book Fair to promote reading and fund-raising for the library. With 60% of the students at CMS At Risk, I believe that the library was a significant factor in helping teachers and students to excel.
