GSLIS
Student Orientation
This web site will guide a prospective or new student through orientation
at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at The University
of Texas. The site gives an overview of the academic programs and services,
while providing practical information to help make the first days at
GSLIS go as smoothly as possible. The site is divided into the following
sections: Advising and Registration, Academics, Faculty and Staff, Computing
and Internet, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Facilities, Student Organizations,
Living and Working in Austin. The orientation was designed by GSLIS
students.
GSLIS
Student Projects
Many students
have developed Web sites as part of their coursework. These are just
a sample of some of the Web sites that have been completed on a variety
of topics.
If I Can Read, I Can
Do Anything
Dr. Loriene Roy, GSLIS Professor, developed this project to promote
reading on Native American Reservations. The project aims to assist
Indian communities with increasing literacy skills, while preserving
Native American identity through a transferable model of a school-year-long
reading promotion program. Each semester, GSLIS students assist with
the project as research associates for Dr. Roy. Recently, the Tocker
Foundation awarded $100,000 to the project , an amount that will fund
the project for the next two years. The project Web site is maintained
by a GSLIS student each semester.
Longhorn
Schoolbus
Longhorn School Bus is an outreach program sponsored by the Cabinet
of College Councils that provides educational workshops for 5th and
6th graders from Austin's Zavala Elementary. The mission of the program
is to encourage children to consider college in their future education
plans, and to excite them about the learning process and potential career
opportunities. It aims to encourage a closer relationship between the
University and the schoolchildren of Austin and inspire them to consider
a college education in their futures. GSLIS students are encouraged
to volunteer each semester. In the past, GSLIS students have given students
a tour of the campus,
Multimedia
Reviews
This site is no longer being updated by GSLIS students; however, all
of the reviews remain because they offer information on programs still
used by many libraries today. The reviews all cover educational or recreational
multimedia projects and were written by GSLIS students. They are also
browsable by subject and searchable by title or publisher.
Texas Book Festival
For a full weekend each November, Austin, Texas celebrates books, authors,
reading, and writing! In 2002, the Texas Book Festival will occur November
15-17. Laura Bush, First Lady of the United States will continue as
honorary chairman for the festival. In the past, GSLIS students have
helped children make their own books, served as author escorts, provided
directions to visitors, and performed other volunteer services.
