"Laguna
Students Sending Bears to Children of Dead Firefighters"
Fourth-grader
Candice Kasero recalls hearing about the children of the firefighters
who died in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and immediately thinking
of their children. . . . The idea clicked with people in Laguna Pueblo,
a small Indian community an hour west of Albuquerque and a world away
from New York City. Candice's idea snowballed. A teacher suggested dressing
the teddy bears in traditional pueblo clothes - shawls, woven belts,
dresses and aprons for she-bears; ribbon shirts, belts and pants for
he-bears. . . . And it grew to 85 bears, which will begin arriving next
week to the Firefighters Union of the Uniformed Firefighters Association,
said Laguna Elementary first-grade teacher Lin Demers.

Tribal
schools prevent 'culture cleansing'
"Ninety
percent of Native American students attend non-Indian schools, public
or private, where culturally-aware teaching is lacking. Many believe
the loss of traditional native knowledge and language is intimately
related to the problems of high dropout rates and poor academic achievement
- the achievement gap. "
