The Old House
Jules and Sky were best friends. They met in first grade in
Ms. Runyon's class where they sat next to each other. Since that day,
Jules and Sky were inseparable. Sky’s parents often joked that they had
two children, but Jules would just smile and eat another piece of pie.
Every other weekend, when Sky’s parents visited the city, Sky
would stay with Jules and Grandma Margo. Grandma Margo lived in an old,
creaky house on the edge of town. She said the house was as old as she
was, which was as old as the trees that surrounded it. Sometimes, late
at night, Sky and Jules heard noises in the woods surrounding the
house. No matter. The house felt like it was protecting them, as if it
was a thousand-soldier army .
One night during their visit, Sky and Jules said good night
to Grandma Margo and went upstairs to bed. As they lay, they began
talking about their two favorite subjects: school and sports.
“Do you think that Coach William is going to let me play
basketball next year?”
“She said that if you practiced harder . . . “
“I know, but I really want to play.”
“Just be patient, Jules. You'll get to play soon.”
They talked for a few more hours, then realized that it was
really late, which was odd. Normally Grandma Margo banged on the
ceiling and yelled for them to go to sleep. As they thought about this,
the night became darker.
Suddenly, Jules and Sky heard a noise from the woods! It
sounded like a cry.
Jules looked at Sky. Sky turned on the light.
“Where is Grandma Margo?” asked Jules. Sky shrugged. They
decided they needed to find her. Quietly, they left the bedroom and
slowly walked downstairs.
Her chair was empty.
The noise sounded again. It came from out back. Maybe Grandma
Margo was outside. They walked to the back of the house. The back door
was open. The cold night air caused goose bumps to appear on their arms.
Slowly, they walked outside and called out for Grandma Margo.
No answer.
Then, Sky noticed a big, black shadow appear behind Jules.
They heard a scream and then . . .
What was the shadow? Who (or what) screamed? What was the
noise in the woods? Where is Grandma Margo? You decide and write your
ending to the story.
