Features of the SSH Transfer Client

The SSH Secure File Transfer Client has many features. Many of them are located in the toolbar at the top of the window. Take some time to get familiar with them...they will save you a bunch of time in the future.

Take a look at this diagram to get a feel for the features of the SSH Secure File Transfer Client window.

This diagram describes the functions of the three parts of the lower portion of the SSH Transfer Client window.

Discussion:

• You can open as many SSH Transfer Client windows as you want (this does have utility in some cases!) by clicking on the "Open Transfer Client" button in the toolbar (it's the yellow icon, just like the one you use to open the application initially).
  
• You can also open a terminal window to access the UNIX shell while your transfer client window is open. Click on the white icon in the toolbar (i.e. the "Terminal" button"). If you open more than one UNI session, all but one session will become "read only" meaning that you will not be able to make changes (from the terminal windows that are "read-only" that is).
  
• To toggle the Transfer Status/Queue window...click that button on the toolbar to turn it on and off.
  
• To download files, navigate to the appropriate file or folder within the "remote" window (which is a graphical representation of your account space on the iSchool server), select the file/folder you want to download, and hit the "download" button. It will prompt you to select a destination on your local machine where you want the file/folder to be placed. Click "OK" and that's it.
  
  To upload files, click the "upload" button. It will prompt you to select a file/folder from your local machine to upload. Do so and click the "Upload" button that appears in the browsing window.
  
• To create a user profile (for ease of use and for use on public computers that have multiple users) click on the "Profiles" button. From the drop-down menu that appears, select "Add User" and give that profile a name in the field provided. To edit a user profiles' settings....click the "Profile" button again and select "Edit Profile" from the drop-down menu. The window that appears will give you a variety of options, such as host & username settings. This is also useful if you frequently connect to multiple servers. After your profile has been added, you can select it from the time you open SSH and it will log on to the appropriate host (and with the appropriate username), but you will need to give it a password.
  
• Use the local machine and remote server buttons to navigate though your folders and files that are displayed in those windows. The buttons are similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer buttons, with which most PC users have experience. The "Home" buttons take you to your home directories/folders. The "Up" buttons move you up one directory/folder. The "Refresh" buttons refresh the files/folders (for instance if you deleted one, you may want to refresh the view so you know that file is gone later on). The "Add New Folder" buttons...well they do just that. And last, the "Show/Hide additional folders" buttons split up the windows so that only your folders show on the left, and the contents of the selected folder show on the right. In the following screenshot, the "Show/Hide folders" button for the remote server has been selected, thus splitting the view. In the left pane, the "infoarch" folder has been selected. In the right pane, the contents of the "infoarch" folder are displayed.
