First, let’s save the presentation as a Web page. Go to File->Save As”, then go down to the drop-box labeled “Save As Type”, and select “Web Page”.
Now you’ll need to give your presentation a name. Our presentation already has a name. It’s called “My_Presentation.htm”. Now we’ll need to choose an appropriate location on our computer that will be easy to access later on. I like to save my Web page presentations to the Desktop because it’s easier to transfer our files and folders to the appropriate location later on. Now click “Save”. Now you’ll notice in the Title bar that the name of our presentation has changed. It’s still called “My Presentation”, but the file extension is .htm instead of .ppt.
You’ll also notice that on the Desktop, our web page presentation has appeared along with a folder. This folder contains additional files, and these files are necessary to ensure that our presentation will display correctly on the World Wide Web.
Now let’s upload our Web page to our public_html folder on the iSchool server. Note that all of these files and folders need to be transferred so that our Web page will display correctly.
To upload these files and folders, we need to initiate a “File Transfer Protocol” session. There a variety of different programs you can use to initiate this session. I like to use the Secure Shell Transfer Client. This program is available on the computers in the IT Lab. You can also download it from Bevoware. To start the session, select the Start menu, and then select “Secure Shell Transfer Client”, here. Once this window opens up, click on the button that’s called “Quick Connect”. Then, we’ll see that our login is “login.gslis (or .ischool – that will also work) - .utexas.edu”. Enter your username and your password and you’ll see that all of [my] files and folders are displaying in the righthand window. They’re on the iSchool server. Now we’ll need to transfer our [presentation] files and folders to the public_html folder right here. To do that, all we need to do is select them – and I’m going to use the mouse to do that, like this – then click down once and “drag” the files and folders to the “public_html” folder.
Now if I open the public_html folder, you’ll see that the folder and the file are displayed. Now we need to make sure that the web page will display correctly. To do this, we’ll open a browser session. I’m going to open Internet Explorer, here, and in the address bar, let’s enter the address of our presentation. It’s going to be http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/, then ~(your username)/(the name of your presentation)My_Presentation.htm. You’ll see here that I’ve entered the case correctly. If you don’t do that, your presentation will not display.
Now I’m going to hit the <Enter> key, and there’s our presentation. Here’s the notes we entered earlier, here’s and outline of the presentation, and here’s the slide.
