Setting Tab Preferences
Mozilla has tucked away a few additional features that make browsing with tabs even more versatile. Let's take a look at a few ways you might consider setting your Tab Preferences.
First, let's find our way to the Tab Preferences Menu:
- Open the Edit menu on the top toolbar.
- Choose Preferences from the drop-down menu.
- When the Preferences menu appears, select Navigator, and then Tabbed Browsing from the drop-down menu:
Now, let's select a few options that will greatly enhance your experience with tabs. On the Tabbed Browsing menu, select the following options by clicking the appropriate boxes.
Tab Display:
- Load links in the background: This feature allows you to neatly tuck away each new link you open behind the page currently displayed in your browser window. Instead of opening your link in a new window, Mozilla will file this tab away at top for later reference, without hiding or obscuring the page you're looking at.
Open tabs instead of windows for:
- Middle-click, Ctrl-click or
Ctrl-Enter: Use mouse and keyboard shortcuts to open
links as new tabs. Click a link with the middle mouse button, click
while pressing Ctrl, or hit the Ctrl and Enter keys at the same
time. This is great news if you're reading a document and a few
links strike your fancy. You want to look at them in a minute-but
not right now! Now you just want to finish that document before you
lose your train of thought. Later on, you can follow the trail you
leave with your tabs.
- Control+Enter in the Location bar: Now you can type in a web address, hit the Ctrl + Enter keys at the same time, and the site automatically opens as a new tab. If you're not crazy about the way Mozilla opens each new site as a blank page with an Untitled tab, this option is for you. Just go ahead and create tabs every time you type in a URL.
