<text>The border at left is from a section of a man's shirt in the style worn by the men of San Pedro la Laguna. Catarina Ixmata de Garcia wove the shirt for her father in law, but it was given to the founder of Arte Maya Tz'utuhil in 1986 when he offered to pay for her son's schooling expenses for a year. Although the children from San Pedro and neighboring towns can now finish all grades of high school in San Pedro, at that time it was necessary for them to leave town and live in one of the large cities in order to complete the last three years of their secondary education. This was an enormous burden for most Mayan families because even though many schools charged no tuition it was still necessary to pay for room and board.</text>
