Requirements
- Appointments are dependent upon availability of funds, academic merit of the applicant, GRE/GPA and TOEFL scores, socio-economic factors and specialized knowledge or skills.
- Students must be enrolled in the School of Information master's or doctoral program. A student on academic probation or working off conditions from admission is not eligible. Continuing students must be making satisfactory progress toward their degree.
- Within the overall guidelines of the University of Texas at Austin, the SI Awards Committee may make judicious exceptions to the above policy.
Awards
- Mary E. Cleveland Centennial Endowed Scholarship | Established 1983
Mrs. Cleveland was a teacher and a school librarian and served as a US Government Librarian during the war years. She organized a new library in Seminole and was appointed assistant director of the Tom Green County Library. It is intended to provide support for a graduate or undergraduate (senior) student in library science.
- Robert R. Douglass Memorial Endowed Scholarship | Established 1970
Dr. Robert Raymond Douglass was an educator founding dean of the School. During his 20 year tenure (1948-68), he oversaw the growth of the program, was actively involved in professional associations, and instrumental in development of the library system in Texas and the Southwest. He retired as an emeritus professor in 1970. Unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- Alice Duggan and David Caldwell Gracy Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1996
David Caldwell Gracy founded Gracy Title Company. Alice Duggan Gracy was an author of genealogy related articles and books and is a descendant of Littlefield Family. Preference is given to students studying archives and records or preservation of access to information of enduring value.
- Carolyn Hixson Harris Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1996
Carolyn Harris, a pioneer in the field of conservation, founded the School's Preservation and Conservation Studies Program and served as director of the program until her untimely death in 1994. The scholarship provides funding for preservation and conservation students within the School of Information.
- Layton B. Murphy Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1984
Professor Layton B. Murphy was a lecturer at the School from 1957-59 and an associate professor (1967-83). His special interests were in cataloging, classifications, and collections development. Unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- Marietta Daniels Shepard Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1987
Marietta Daniels Shepard was chief of the Library Development Program of the Organization of American States, a fifty-year member of the American Library Association and founder of The Seminar on Acquisition of Latin American Library Materials, Inc. (SALALM). The scholarship provides support for students interested in developing libraries in Latin American and the Caribbean who intend to pursue a career in one of those countries.
- C. Glenn Sparks Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1996
Dr. C. Glenn Sparks was an outstanding administrator, author, editor and consultant who served as member of the faculty from 1971-1995 and dean of the school from 1972-82. Unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- Phillip Tocker Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1995
The Tocker Foundation, founded by Phillip and Olive Tocker, assists libraries in making services more accessible to individuals who by reason of distance, residence, handicap, age, literacy level, or other disadvantages are unable to receive benefits of public library services. Unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- Sam G. Whitten Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1986
Sam G. Whitten was a political activist and a champion of intellectual freedom and civil liberties. He was a recipient of a TLA Distinguished Service Award, and a member of the Austin Public Library Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board of Central Texas Library System. The scholarship named in his honor was established by alumni and friends. It is an unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- H. W. Wilson Endowed Presidential Scholarship | Established 1994
The H. W. Wilson Foundation's goal is to attract potential librarians to the field and support qualified applicants. It has provided funding to support library and information studies for more than 40 years. The original grant to establish the Wilson EPS was renewed in 2002. The scholarship provides support for students who intend to pursue careers in library education.
