Requirements
- Appointments are dependent upon availability of funds, academic merit of the applicant, GRE/GPA and TOEFL scores, socio-economic factors and specialized knowledge or skills.
- Students must be enrolled in the School of Information master's or doctoral program. A student on academic probation or working off conditions from admission is not eligible. Continuing students must be making satisfactory progress toward their degree.
- Within the overall guidelines of the University of Texas at Austin, the SI Awards Committee may make judicious exceptions to the above policy.
Awards
- The Kate Polk Dimmit Memorial Scholarship | Established 1974
This scholarship was established by Miss Lenoir Dimmitt to honor her mother, Mrs. Kate Polk Dimmitt. Lenoir Dimmitt was a librarian with the Dallas Public Library System and Texas Library Association president from 1935-37. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is a resident of Texas employed by or interested in a career with a rural Texas public library.
- Catheryne S. Franklin Centennial Endowed Scholarship | Established 1984
Catheryne Franklin was a public school librarian in Laredo, Mercedes and Seymour, a professor of children's literature and librarianship (1956-1978), an advocate for access to resources for Texas' Hispanic population, and president of TLA (1972-73). The scholarship provides support for students in the School of Information.
- GLISSA Endowed Scholarship | Established 1994
The GLISSA Endowed Scholarship was established in honor of the student association. The scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate outstanding leadership, service, and commitment to the School.
- Billie Grace Herring Scholarship | Established 1997
Dr. Billie Grace Herring was a member of the faculty, specializing in children's libraries and youth services, from 1968-1996. She served as associate dean, graduate advisor, and program director for Learning Resources Certification. The scholarship is usually awarded to students who express a professional interest in the areas of children and youth librarianship.
- Houston Endowment Graduate Fellowship | Established 1994
The Houston Endowment provides funding for programs in education, health care, human services, and cultural arts particularly in the Houston area and the State of Texas. The Houston Endowment Graduate Fellowship provides scholarships and funding for students in the Preservation and Conservation Program in the School of Information.
- Alice Brooks McGuire Endowed Scholarship | Established 1996
Dr. Alice (Sally) Brooks McGuire was a member of the faculty from 1968-72. As president of the American Association of School Librarians, she helped develop The Standards for School Library Programs (1960) and was named Librarian of the Year by the Texas Library Association in 1967. Unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- Benonine Muse Scholarship Fund | Established 1975
Benonine Muse received her bachelor of Library Science degree from Albany Library School in 1920 and died in 1921. The Benonine Muse Scholarship Fund was established by her sister, Dr. Mary Grace Muse Atkins, a member of the UT faculty (English) from 1927-55. Unrestricted funding for School of Information Students.
- Temple Foundation Centennial Scholarship | Established 1983
The T.L.L. Temple Foundation awards grants to a broad range of projects and causes in the areas of education, health care and medical research, community and social services, and cultural arts and the humanities. While a member of the School's Advisory Council, Ellen Temple was instrumental in setting up the Temple Foundation Centennial Scholarship. The scholarship, which provides support for students with financial need, embodies the Temple Foundation's long-standing support of Texas Libraries.
- Texwood Furniture Corporation Endowed Scholarship | Established 2000
Carol L. Gallagher was former chair of the School's Advisory Council (Exp 99), and owner of Texwood Furniture. The Texwood Furniture scholarship was established in her honor and transferred with ownership of the Corporation in 2001. Unrestricted scholarship for School of Information students.
- Betty Bullington Threadgill Scholarship | Established 1996
Betty Bullington Threadgill was the first recipient of a MLS degree from the School (1951). Wife of the late Colonel Walton O. Threadgill, Mrs. Threadgill served as a librarian in Kansas City, MO, and Fort Beloit, VA. She returned to Austin after her husband retired from the military. The scholarship was established by Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Vertrees and funded by close personal friends and family. Preference for returning students with prior military experience (US).
