Admissions OverviewTo gain admittance to the School of Information, applicants must meet the following basic requirements:
Two applications must be completed for admission: one to the Graduate School of the University (GIAC) and one to the School of Information. Both applications must be complete for admission to be granted. Please submit official documents to GIAC as far in advance of the deadline as possible to allow for processing time, as there are many students applying for admission through GIAC every semester. Deadlines for Admissions ApplicationsIn order to be considered for academic awards, applications need to be received by February 1 in both offices (GIAC and the iSchool), regardless of the entrance semester. Applications from students not seeking academic awards are due March 1 for the fall semester and September 1 for the spring. Please disregard the October 1, deadline indicated on the Texas Common Application. Students Seeking Academic Awards

Conditional AdmissionsOnce the application process is completed, students who fail to meet one of the requirements for regular admission may be granted conditional admission under strictly controlled criteria and conditions. International StudentsThe University of Texas requires a score of 550 (paper test), 213 (computer-based test), or 79 (internet-based test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) OR an overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). To gain admission to the School of Information, international students who are not native English speakers must achieve a total score of at least 600 on the traditional (paper-based) TOEFL or of at least 250 on the new, computer-based TOEFL. The School reserves the right to require a re-administration of the TOEFL in Austin and/or to require an international student to take remedial work in English. The Graduate School offers courses in writing for graduate students for whom English is a second language. The School of Information often recommends that students who need further work with written English take these courses.
