| Dan Updegrove, Vice
President for Information Technology at the University
of Texas, has joined School of Information as Joint Appointee. In his Joint Appointment,
he
has been invited to participate in the life of the School as time allows
by guest
lecturing in classes, providing colloquia, and participating in faculty
meetings.
"I am delighted to welcome Dan Updegrove to the School of Information family,"
said Dean
Andrew Dillon. "He has accepted our offer for a courtesy appointment
and
I believe he can offer the students and faculty many new opportunities
for
collaboration across campus."
Former Chief Information Officer at Yale University, Updegrove was
appointed Vice President for Information Technology at UT Austin in
January 2001. His role in the development of the information/communication
infrastructure and services of the University of Texas includes the development
of
the "Digital Knowledge Gateway" initiative. Additionally, he
is responsible for
academic computing and instructional technology services,
administrative computing services and telecommunications.
Updegrove, who also is adjunct professor of electrical engineering at
Yale, has lectured, published and consulted extensively in the areas of
campus computing strategies, data networking, enterprise systems
implementation and computer-based modeling of financial and economic
systems.
After receiving a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research
from Cornell University in 1970, he held positions including associatevice
provost of information systems and computing at the University of Pennsylvania;
vice president of Educom (now Educause) in Princeton, N.J., and research
associate
at Yale and the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Active in the national computing scene, Updegrove currently serves as
co-chair of a national task force on Internet security under the auspices
of Educause as well as a member of higher education advisory boards for
Apple Computer and Dell Computer Corp. Previously, he was a higher
education adviser to IBM and Microsoft, and chairman of the board of
PREPnet, a statewide network in Pennsylvania.
