Galloway will take over the editorship of French Colonial History,
a new journal published by the French Colonial Historical Society and
Michigan State University Press - 5/30/02.

Emilio
Zamora, Associate Professor, presented a paper entitled "Historian
As Archivist: A Mexican American Retrospective," on May 17, 2002,
during the Society of Southwest Archivists Annual Meeting at Phoenix,
Arizona. Emilio Zamora also delivered a keynote presentation, June 1,
on Mexican American history during the 2002 Annual League of United
Latin American Citizens Convention at Austin, Texas.
Irene Owens presents the Fourteenth Annual Dorothy Porter Wesley Lecture

Irene
Owens, Associate Professor, presented the Fourteenth Annual Dorothy
Porter Wesley Lecture at Howard University in Washington, D.C. on April
19, 2002. The criteria for selection are that the lecturer be a "prominent/promising
and productive library professional, who has something significant to
say about libraries and librarianship to our general audience."
The Dorothy Porter Wesley Lecture, initiated at Howard University in
1987 is a way of honoring Wesley's exemplary work. She was a librarian,
scholar, bibliophile, and collector. With a passionate single-mindedness
she built the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University
into one of the largest and most comprehensive collections of African
American history in the world. She was the recipient of many awards,
including the prestigious Charles Frankel Award from the National Endowment
for the Humanities, which was presented at the White House by President
William Jefferson Clinton in December 1995.
Loriene Roy Receives $100,000 grant for "If
I Can Read, I Can Do Anything" Project - posted 4/17/02.
Professor Loriene
Roy was recently awarded $100,000 from the Tocker
Foundation to fund the "If
I Can Read, I Can Do Anything" project. The grant will support
the project for the next two years.
The "If I Can Read, I Can Do Anything" project aims to assist
Indian communities with increasing literacy skills, while preserving
native American identity through a transferable model of a school-year-long
reading promotion program.
Barbara Immroth appointed to American Libraries Advisory Committee

Professor Barbara
Immroth was recently appointed by ALA President-elect Maurice J.
Freedman to serve as a member of the ALA American Libraries Advisory
Committee for a two-year term. The charge of the committee is "To
review and recommend editorial policies for American Libraries
and to provide oversight for the implementation of those policies. To
communicate with and operate within the frameworks established by the
ALA publishing Committee. To serve as a channel for member communication
regarding the scope and coverage of American Libraries."
American Libraries is the monthly journal of the 60,000+ member
American Library Association.
