LIS382L18: Online sources and Services Class Presentation
For your presentation to the class, imagine the following scenario:
1) You are working in some professional information service environment. Please provide a description of the setting in your introductory remarks.
2) You have been approached within that setting by a client/patron to assist with a search for information. Imagine a search request that can be accommodated by both a fee-based information resource (like Dialog or Nexis-Lexis) and by some Internet based information (Web or some FTP or Usenet environment).
3) You are asked by "the boss" to report on your effort to the otherprofessionals in your unit. Assume that they know only slightly less than you do and then · your responsibility is to provide a tutorial on how you did what you did and · to provide some sort of guidance about when they might decide to turn to the Web, etc. and when to turn to the fee-based databases resources should a similar request occur.
4) Provide some sort of visual resources to illustrate your points. Power Point slides/overheads, Web page content, and/or a few sample citations downloaded from Dialog or Nexis-Lexis. Grading Criteria: Clarity and structure of your explanation Appropriateness of your search strategies to each environment (Web vs. fee-based)
Complexity/Difficulty of your imagined query Clarity of your discussion about when to use Web vs. fee-based Effectiveness of your visual presentation aids Eye contact Body language A PC/Mac with LitePro will be provided with Internet connection, if you would like to use them.
But that is not an essential element in the grading criteria. Your class presentation can be just as impressive with good overheads or a handout.
Help with your handout/presentation is always available from your instructor. Samples of previous semester's efforts is also available upon request.
