Sacaton
Kickoff!
Prior to
attending the REFORMA conference in Tucson, Dr. Loriene Roy
and Heather Ball traveled to the Gila Indian reservation to
help out at the Sacaton Elementry School Kickoff. Stories
were read to over 400 Sacaton kids! They especially liked
the TRUE ghost stories that Loriene told them.
The Chandler Public Library sponsored the kickoff with "If I
Can Read", providing book bags full of incentives

Storytellers Video
This summer we started putting together
a video called Storytellers for schools participating in the “If I Can
Read” program. So far, Storytellers features all kinds of stories, told
by Christine McNew, Tim Tingle and Dr. Loriene Roy. Ultimately, the video
will be comprised of 8-10 stories.
Christine McNew
was the first storyteller to be filmed for the video. She is the Youth
Services Consultant for the Texas State Library and a professional storyteller
for eight years. Her story is called “The Dancing Ghost” and was written
by John Allwright and Christine McNew. It was featured on “Texas Ghosts”,
an annual program aired by Channel 26 in Houston around Halloween time.
Tim Tingle is a professional storyteller and is a member of the
Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Tingle travels around the country bringing
his stories to children and adults alike. continued,
